German Finance Minister Christian Lindner has in recent days stressed to the Italian Treasury his concerns about a possible hostile takeover of Commerzbank by UniCredit.
This was reported by two sources close to the situation.
Lindner outlined his position directly to the Italian Treasury, along with public criticism from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz this week, in an attempt to curb the takeover of a bank that is crucial for financing the Mittelstand, the medium-sized enterprises that form the backbone of the country’s economy.
