Chancellor Rachel Reeves has warned Britain to prepare for tough decisions. This has sparked rumours that she may increase capital gains tax (CGT) during what has been described as a “painful” budget on 29 October.
The Guardian reported on Thursday that Reeves could hike the tax as high as 39%. Treasury modelling being reviewed by the chancellor and seen by the publication showed officials were testing a range of 33% to 39% for CGT.
It remains to be seen, however, what Reeves will actually announce on the day.
