Polly Weis thought she would be living and studying in France right now. Instead, she is at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas taking full advantage of its mission of community, faith and scholarship.

She is a junior from Grand Rapids, Mich. Before coming to Benedictine she worked on a blueberry farm, a golf course, and a retail clothing store.

Since being here she has interned at a financial services firm and traveled on academic field trips. In addition to her studies in finance and economics, Weiss is a Gregorian Fellow in the Gregorian Institute for leadership at Benedictine College.

“Initially, I didn’t plan on attending Benedictine. I was born in France, and throughout my high school years I envisioned returning to immerse myself in the French culture and continue my schooling there,” she said.

That all changed when she visited her older sister, who was attending Benedictine College. “I met her friends, professors and was witness to the vibrant faith and people,” Polly said. “She had developed these incredible and meaningful friendships, and I realized I wanted the same.”

She said the community at Benedictine College captured her heart so much that she joined the Student Alumni Board to help lead Benedictine’s traditions. “In choosing Benedictine I have come to love many aspects of the community but especially the timeless traditions that we have here,” she said. “I love everything from the beanies, homecoming week, and the festivities.”

As for academic, the Gregorian Fellows program has introduced her to leaders from all walks of life, and her campus job at the President’s office has has deepened those relationships. She traveled to South Bend, Ind., for an academic conference at Notre Dame University, and the college’s preparation has helped her serve as an intern at Wealth Foundations in Michigan.

And it all happens in an atmosphere of faith, she said.

“Benedictine College will have prepared me well for the modern world, as it has integrated the Catholic faith and moral values into the challenging academics, the development of skills, true and lasting friendships and the lead for a change in culture.”
