With the Amex Business Gold, you can earn 100,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $15,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months of card membership. The exact value of the 100,000 points depends on the redemption. Let’s look at a few examples of how you can use your points using Amex transfer partners:
-
Iberia business-class flights: You can find business fares available on Iberia for 34,000 Avios (plus taxes and fees) each during off-peak months, such as March and April. You can typically find up to two award seats available on flights to Barcelona and Madrid from Boston and New York. For the same fares we found available in April, the flights would cost you around $2,700 each.
-
KLM economy flights: KLM and Air France regularly offer flight promotions through their Flying Blue loyalty program. Sometimes, you can fly to Europe for as little as 15,000 miles in economy class. For example, we found availability for six passengers to fly from Atlanta to Amsterdam for a total of 90,000 miles (plus $585 taxes and fees). In cash, that same flight would cost a total of $8,264 (which is a ridiculously high amount, even for that many passengers).
-
Virgin Voyages cruises: Virgin Voyages cruise itineraries can often be booked with Virgin points, something to keep in mind for the next corporate retreat. The price is typically for the cabin, which often fits up to two people. Recent offers we’ve seen are four- or five-day Caribbean cruises ranging from 95,000 to 115,000 points and seven-day European cruises for 160,000 points. You can stretch your points even further with frequent transfer bonuses between American Express and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club.

Consider these factors to help you decide whether the Amex Business Gold makes sense for you:
You can earn 100,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $15,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months of card membership. That’s a hefty spend requirement, but it’s often doable if you have a lot of business expenses.

The Amex Business Gold has a $375 annual fee (see rates & fees), which might not make sense for everyone. The card’s rewards and benefits offer plenty of potential value to help offset the yearly cost, but you have to see if that value applies to your business spending.
You can earn:
-
4x points on your top two eligible spending categories each billing cycle (up to $150,000 in combined spending each calendar year, then 1x)
-
3x points on flights and prepaid hotels booked on AmexTravel.com
-
1x points on all other purchases
Eligible spending categories include:
-
Purchases at US media providers for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio)
-
U.S. purchases made from electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers
-
U.S. purchases at restaurants, including takeout and delivery
-
U.S. purchases at gas stations
-
Transit purchases, including trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways
-
Monthly wireless telephone service charges made directly from a wireless telephone service provider in the U.S.
If your business expenses fall into these categories, the Amex Business Gold Card could be the right fit for your company.
Some of the top benefits include:
-
Earn up to $20 in monthly statement credits (up to an annual savings of $240) for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores — enrollment is required.
-
Receive up to $12.95 statement credit (plus applicable taxes) for one Walmart+ membership.
These two benefits are likely the easiest way to offset some of the card’s annual fee. If they don’t make sense for you, consider looking into other travel credit cards.
