Most readers would already know that DMG MORI’s (ETR:GIL) stock increased by 1.8% over the past three months. We wonder if and what role the company’s financials play in that price change as a company’s long-term fundamentals usually dictate market outcomes. In this article, we decided to focus on DMG MORI’s ROE.

Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder’s equity.

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders’ Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for DMG MORI is:

12% = €171m ÷ €1.4b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

The ‘return’ is the yearly profit. Another way to think of that is that for every €1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn €0.12 in profit.

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or “retains” for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don’t have the same features.

At first glance, DMG MORI seems to have a decent ROE. And on comparing with the industry, we found that the the average industry ROE is similar at 10%. Consequently, this likely laid the ground for the decent growth of 7.3% seen over the past five years by DMG MORI.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that DMG MORI’s reported growth was lower than the industry growth of 15% over the last few years, which is not something we like to see.
