The Northern Kentucky Health Department has identified an outbreak of an illness causing stomach problems for some residents.According to the health department, an outbreak of Cryptosporidiosis, also known as “Crypto,” is going around the region.Officials said there are 12 confirmed cases of Crypto in the area. There are also 20 unconfirmed cases, meaning they are experiencing symptoms but have either not been tested or results or not back yet.Crypto is a gastrointestinal illness that causes symptoms such as watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, low-grade fever, vomiting, and nausea.These conditions can lead to dehydration, with young people who are immunologically suppressed at increased risk for more severe illness.The health department said most people who come in contact with the virus will develop symptoms in seven days from the time of exposure.Officials said individuals that test positive for Crypto, or have experienced symptoms, should not use swimming pools for at least two weeks after symptoms subside.For more information on Crypto, click here.
