PHOENIX — A former Arizona Secret Service agent pleaded guilty to stealing cryptocurrency, authorities announced on Friday.

Anthony Evans, 32, of Tucson admitted to transferring $56,000 of cryptocurrency to two of his wallets while employed as a Special Agent for the United States Secret Service in the Phoenix Field Office in 2022.

After he gained access to the cryptocurrency that was located on a hard wallet in the “agency’s secure evidence vault,” the former agent moved the crypto through different exchanges and converted it into cash.

He later transferred it to his own bank accounts and used the funds to pay off personal expenses and his debt.

Evans is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 19 and is faced with up to a year and a day in prison. He will also have to pay the victim for the value of the stolen cryptocurrency, including any gain in its value.
