As the UK enjoys a spell of warm weather, it’s important to remember that winter is just around the corner. This means longer nights, colder days and inevitably, the need to turn on our heating systems, leading to increased gas and electricity usage.

Winter always poses a greater challenge for low-income families who need to keep their homes heated for extended periods. Furthermore, energy prices are set to rise again in October.

However, there is some relief in sight for the most financially vulnerable households, with the Government confirming several support schemes for the upcoming winter season, acknowledging the struggle millions will face, reports Cambridgeshire Live.

Here are some of the schemes that will be available:

Winter Fuel Payment

Previously, the Winter Fuel Payment was distributed to all pensioners. However, this winter will see a change, with only the poorest receiving the payment.

This includes those on Pension Credit and Income Support. The payment can be worth up to £300 and is typically paid between mid-November and Christmas.

Warm Home Discount

The Warm Home Discount is provided to low-income individuals and pensioners to assist with their energy bills. It offers a one-time discount of £150 off bills between October and March.

The timing of the discount application is at the discretion of the energy suppliers.

Council tax reduction

Low-income households may be eligible for a council tax reduction through their local authority, providing year-round assistance to families on benefits or those grappling with living costs. If you believe you might qualify but haven’t received this aid, information can be found on your council’s website.

Cold Weather Payment

Cold Weather Payments are activated during particularly icy weather conditions. Although it may seem distant now, the cold weather is just around the corner.

These payments amount to £25 per week for each seven-day period of freezing weather and will be distributed between November and March.

Household Support Fund

The Household Support Fund is utilised by councils to provide cost of living support payments to those most in need. Anyone experiencing financial hardship can apply for assistance, though individuals receiving benefits are typically more likely to succeed.

The summer phase of the HSF is set to conclude at the end of September. It remains uncertain whether the new Labour Government will extend it into the winter months, but if so, payments could become available from October.
