Gas prices were virtually flat across most Canadian cities over the past week, according to data from Kalibrate. Of course, the pause could be short-lived. Saturday is the earliest date given by U.S. President Donald Trump to hit Canadian imports with a 25 per cent tariff.

The nationwide average price for regular fuel dipped 0.1 cents per litre between Jan. 23 and Jan. 30. The biggest increases were in Abbotsford, B.C., and Edmonton. The weekly discounts were largest in Winnipeg, and Sarnia, Ont.

Trump’s tariffs against Canada and Mexico could begin on March 1, Reuters reported on Friday, citing unnamed sources familiar with White House planning. On Thursday, Trump said he would soon decide whether to exclude Canadian and Mexican oil imports from the 25 per cent tariff he’s vowed to impose. Economists and industry experts have warned such a move would send gas prices soaring on both sides of the border.

“Applying a 25 per cent tariff on this crude will increase pump prices by at least 10 per cent. Not next month. Not next week, but overnight,” En-Pro International chief petroleum analyst Roger McKnight wrote in a blog.

On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada said its scenario-based analysis found Trump’s tariffs would cause a 2.5 percentage point hit to average annual GDP growth in the first year.
