Gas prices fell four cents per litre of regular fuel on an average of cities across Canada over the past week, according to data from Kalibrate. The discount spanned Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia.

Vancouver booked the biggest weekly price drop between Feb. 13 and Feb. 20., at 9.2 cents per litre. Gas stations in Brandon, Man. saw the biggest price increase, at 8.5 cents per litre.

At this time last year, the Canada-wide average was 4.3 per cent lower, at $1.542 per litre.

Earlier this week, Statistics Canada said gas prices increased 8.6 per cent year-over-year last month, compared to a 3.5 per cent annual rise in December. The federal data agency says energy prices were the top contributor to rising inflation in January.

“In January, prices increased the most in Manitoba (+25.9 per cent) due to the re-introduction of the provincial gas tax at a lower rate after its temporary suspension from January to December 2024,” StatCan wrote on Tuesday.

Looking ahead, En-Pro International’s chief petroleum analyst says this is the time of year when gasoline and diesel refineries go into maintenance mode.

“This normally forces prices to increase, peaking in mid-April, and slowly receding after the U.S. Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial (not on the calendar) start of the ‘driving season,'” he wrote in a blog published Thursday.

“Prices also increase with the government-mandated change from winter to summer-grade gasoline, as well as the jump in the carbon tax scheduled for April 1st.”
