Gas prices could soar in a few short years, according to a forecast by Exxon Mobil (AP Photo/David Zalubowski) (The Associated Press)

Gas prices fell for a fourth straight week, led by discounts throughout the Maritimes. According to data from Kalibrate, the average price of regular gasoline fell 2.7 cents per litre between Aug. 22 and Aug. 29.

From Saint John, N.B. to Charlottetown, P.E.I., prices fell an average of 6.25 cents per litre. The largest individual price drops were in North Bay, Ont., and Regina. Abbotsford, B.C. and Sarnia, Ont. were among the few markets where prices moved higher.

Earlier this week, ExxonMobil (XOM.TO) warned that oil, and therefore refined product, prices could soar in a few short years without new investments in crude production. In its annual global outlook, the U.S.-based supermajor called for global demand in 2050 to be the same — or even slightly higher — than current levels. By contrast, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says demand must drop 75 per cent by 2050 to limit warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial norms, as called for in the Paris climate agreement.

“The IEA says, as do we, that the world is not on that pathway,” Chris Birdsall, Exxon’s director of economics and energy, told Bloomberg News. “We have to be crystal clear on the path the world is on. Otherwise, we delude ourselves.”

In a report published on Tuesday, U.S. consulting giant McKinsey & Company pointed to a “reality gap” between ambitions and outcomes for renewable energy sources like wind and solar, and the electrification of vehicles and heat pumps in buildings.
