BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazil’s government has bought back $2 billion of global bonds maturing between 2024 and 2041 to reduce its financing costs, the country’s Treasury said in a statement on Thursday. The government bought back the debt with funds raised from the sale of $3.5 billion of global bonds due 2045. The move was intended to facilitate future debt issuance by Brazilian companies, whose bonds are often priced in line with the country’s sovereign bond yield curve, or the returns a government’s bonds pay as they mature. Brazil’s new 2045 bond will deliver investors a yield of 5.131 percent, or 187.5 basis points, over comparable U.S. Treasury notes, the widest spread for a 30-year bond issued by the Brazilian government since 2009.
