Financial Insights That Matter
Gas prices increased by double digits in five Canadian cities over the past week, pushing the nationwide average for regular fuel up by 1.2 cents per litre, according to data from Kalibrate.
Chicoutimi, Que. led the gains between Jan. 2 and Jan. 9, with a rise of 16.8 cents per litre. Trois Rivieres, Que. and North Bay, Ont. saw the next largest price gains over the last seven days.
Drivers could consider investing in oil and gas stocks to help offset rising prices at the pumps. The sector is off to a strong start in 2025.
While some Wall Street analysts forecast greater oil supply putting pressure on crude prices this year, near-term demand looks robust as oil rallies. West Texas Intermediate crude (CL=F) is at its highest level in three months. However, some predict natural gas will be the star fossil fuel in 2025.
“In 2025, the energy sector will be less about barrels of oil and more about … billions of cubic feet of natural gas demand in 2025 and beyond as the technology sector intersects with the energy sector,” Rob Thummel, senior portfolio manager at Tortoise Capital, said on Thursday.
Data centres could draw as much electricity as Japan by 2026, more than double their demand today, according to the International Energy Agency.
