Canada’s Cassie Sharpe caps comeback season with halfpipe bronze at freeski worlds #CanadaFinance

Canadian freestyle skier Cassie Sharpe returned to the podium at the world championships for the first time since 2019 with bronze in the women’s halfpipe event on Sunday in Silvaplana, Switzerland.

The 32-year-old from Comox, B.C., earned a score of 88.00, beating out fellow Canadian Rachael Karker (86.25) for third place on the final day of competition at the FIS Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships.

Great Britain’s Zoe Atkin won gold with 93.50 points, capturing her first career world title.

China’s Li Fanghui (93.00) finished ahead of Sharpe for the silver medal.

Dillan Glennie of Courtenay, B.C., was 11th and Calgary’s Amy Fraser was 12th.

Sharpe, who won Olympic halfpipe gold in 2018 and silver in 2022, made her comeback to the sport in September after taking a two-season break following the birth of her daughter, Louella, in 2023.

She won silver in the event at worlds in 2015 and 2019.

In the men’s halfpipe, Calgary’s Brendan MacKay was the top Canadian, finishing seventh.

The same venue hosted the aerials world championships on Sunday where Quebec City’s Alexandre Duchaine was just off the podium for the best finish by a Canadian in the men’s event.

Marion Thenault of Sherbrooke, Que., was the top Canadian on the women’s side, finishing fifth.
