Canada’s unemployment rate rises to 6.6% #CanadaFinance

Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 6.6 per cent in August, with 1.5 million Canadians unemployed last month, Statistics Canada said Friday.

Compared to August of last year, there were 272,000 more unemployed, with the unemployment rate at its highest since May of 2017, excluding the pandemic.

The economy added 22,000 jobs, with gains made in part time work (+1.8 per cent), but offset by losses in full time work (-0.3 per cent). Private sector employment rose for the first time since April by 38,000 positions, after a loss of 42,000 jobs the previous month. Public sector employment remained unchanged from the previous month.
