Gas prices fell in British Columbia over the past week as a new study suggests relief may be on the way for one of Canada’s priciest regions for fuel.
The C.D. Howe Institute found Lower Mainland residents will benefit from the newly expanded Trans Mountain pipeline. The much-delayed project went into service on May 1, boosting capacity from 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000 barrels per day.
C.D. Howe fellow-in-residence G. Kent Fellows says a greater flow of gasoline and diesel on the pipeline will mean less reliance on more expensive rail transport. According to his math, bottlenecks on Trans Mountain prior to the expansion have cost B.C. residents $1.5 billion per year since 2015.
The nationwide average price of regular fuel barely budged between Aug. 8 and Aug. 15, according to data from Kalibrate. The biggest price drops were in Kelowna, B.C. and Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. Meanwhile, Peterborough and Kingston, Ont. saw the biggest hikes.
