The FP Canada Fellow distinction recognizes people who have made significant contributions to furthering FP Canada’s mandate of advancing professional financial planning in Canada, the certification body said in a release Tuesday.

In the release, Tashia Batstone, president and CEO of FP Canada, congratulated Brayman and Thorne on earning the distinction, thanking them for their “many contributions to the profession.”

Now retired, Brayman is the founder of PlanPlus Inc. and the former CEO of PlanPlus Global, an investment and financial planning software provider. He has spoken at conferences around the world, received numerous awards for his research.

Brayman has also served on multiple boards. He’s a current board member for the Canadian Foundation for Financial Planning and president of the Academy of Financial Services, a global non-profit for academics dedicated to financial planning.

Brayman’s contributions to the industry include leading research on the Fintellect Taskforce, providing input for the initial launch of the projection assumption guidelines from the FP Canada Standards Council and conducting research for the Canadian Foundation for Financial Planning, the release said.

Thorne is director of advanced planning, estate and financial planning services with Sun Life and was recently appointed as a member of the FP Canada Standards Council’s Standards Panel.

The seasoned certified financial planner (CFP) has volunteered his expertise on various subjects such as corporate structures, tax planning and estate planning as a presenter for several non-profits.

Thorne also earned accolades for his performance on exams from FP Canada and STEP Canada.

Among his contributions, Thorne has helped develop content for the CFP exam, spoken at FP Canada’s Financial Planning Conference and served as a CFP professional representative on the Exam Harmonization Task Force between FP Canada and the Institute of Financial Planning (formerly the Institut québécois de planification financière), the release said.

Nominees for the FP Canada Fellow distinction are evaluated by an independent committee of financial planners.
