KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WITN) – Police in one Eastern Carolina town are warning people about a scamming technique involving machines found at gas stations.

Kitty Hawk Police posted on Facebook, saying they stopped a woman Monday from putting $9,000 into a Bitcoin ATM.

Recent trends show that those machines are often connected to crimes, according to police.

They say the scammers were posing as federal law enforcement with a fake warrant with a $45,000 bond. The scammers convinced the woman to get $9,000 cash from her bank and insert it into the Bitcoin ATM to transfer to them, Kitty Hawk Police say.

Law enforcement and government entities will never ask you to make a payment through Bitcoin or gift cards.
