Two suspects tied to a South American cargo theft ring were arrested after Los Angeles police recovered over $3.9 million in stolen goods—including $2.7 million worth of Bitcoin mining computers intercepted at LAX.
Detectives from the LAPD’s Cargo Theft Unit, working with the Los Angeles Port Police and other agencies, apprehended Oscar David Borrero-Manchola, 41, and Yonaiker Rafael Martinez-Ramos, 25, following an investigation into stolen cargo linked to the South American Theft Group.
The mining equipment was recovered as it was being loaded onto a plane bound for Hong Kong. The seizure highlights the scale and sophistication of ongoing cargo theft operations targeting high-value tech shipments.
Bitcoin (BTC) mining computers, which require significant investment and are often in high demand, have become a growing target for organized theft groups.
Authorities also recovered $1.2 million in additional stolen goods, including tequila, electronics, and pet food, from storage units in the San Fernando Valley.
Borrero-Manchola was cited and released, while Martinez-Ramos remains in custody on a no-bail warrant.
The investigation is ongoing, with officials warning that more arrests may follow as law enforcement continues efforts to safeguard commercial cargo routes.
