French Finance Minister Alain Lombard has praised U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend several planned import tariffs, describing the move as a signal of Washington’s willingness to return to the negotiating table with key allies, including the European Union.

However, he cautioned against declaring the issue resolved, noting that several tariffs remain in effect. “For this reason, Europe must maintain pressure,” he added, underscoring the importance of ongoing diplomatic engagement.

While Europe welcomes the pause, policymakers are approaching Trump’s trade policy with caution. EU officials have said they are preparing for all scenarios, including the possibility of retaliatory tariffs should negotiations falter or exemptions expire without resolution.
Lombard’s remarks reflect broader sentiment in Brussels, where leaders see the tariff truce as a positive development but remain wary of what may come after the 90-day window expires.
