Exiting coal is one of the major challenges facing the energy sector and the institutions who finance it. But, despite pioneering commitments made in 2019, French finance is struggling to complete this exit. So, while France advocates for the abandonment of coal on the international stage, domestic banks, insurers and investors continue to support companies in the sector. Stricter regulations are needed to turn the page on coal and give credibility to France’s ambitions and demands to move away from this fossil fuel.
