Ronnie Otieno, head of student welfare, in an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke stated that Ashley’s peers grew worried when she didn’t attend a practical lesson on Friday, October 11.

“Ashley hadn’t been seen on Thursday, even during a welcome event for first-year students. When she missed class on Friday, they knew something was wrong. Her phone rang unanswered, so her classmates went to her room and found it locked. We had to break down the door to get in, and there she was, lying lifeless on the floor,” Otieno recounted.

How did activist Ashley Magero die?

Upon observation, it was revealed that the cooking gas was still on, with a pot of burnt tea and a jiko that had been used for boiling meat.

Otieno speculated that suffocation from the unventilated room could have led to her tragic demise.

“It seems she was trying to reach the door but was overwhelmed. She likely suffocated from the jiko,” he added.

Ashley’s family was notified, and her body was transferred to a morgue in her home county of Bungoma.

This incident marks the fourth student death since the school reopened, leaving the community in grief.

“Yesterday, we laid our lecturer to rest. We’re heartbroken and praying for strength,” Otieno shared.

Ashley was known for her active participation in the anti-finance bill protests that led to the deaths of 39 youths, according to the KNCHR report.
