MEDINA, Ohio — As citizens prepare to head to the polls, Medina Finance Director Keith Dirham wants to remind the public that the city will have a proposed tax levy on the Nov. 5 ballot.

“This is a property tax renewal levy for EMS,” Dirham said during Monday’s City Council meeting (Aug. 26).

“The way this works is that our local ambulance service, known as the Medina Life Support Team, is a partnership between the city, the hospital, Medina Township and Montville Township.

“Since the 1970s, the city has paid for its portion of the service through property tax levies.”

Dirham said if the levy is approved, it will not raise taxes on Medina property owners because it’s a renewal — which means it’s a tax that residents are already paying.

He said the levy costs the owner of a home valued at $100,000 roughly $71 per year.

Also during the meeting, Mayor Dennis Hanwell announced that anyone who wants to learn more about the city will have an opportunity to do so next month, when he presents the annual State of the City address.

Hanwell will first present the address to council at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9.

Then, at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 10, Hanwell will present the address to the Medina Chamber of Commerce at Williams on the Lake.

Hanwell also announced that a 9/11 memorial ceremony will take place at the city’s 9/11 memorial located on the south side of Medina Fire Station No. 1.

The ceremony will take place Sept. 11. Visitors can arrive at 9:50 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.
