The Supreme Court on Monday will hear the case related to the murder and alleged rape of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

According to the cause list uploaded on the apex court’s website, a bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra is slated to hear the case, of which the top court took suo motu cognisance.

The Centre has recently filed an application in the apex court alleging “unpardonable” non-cooperation by the West Bengal government in extending logistical support to the CISF, tasked with providing security at the hospital.

In its application, the Union Home Ministry has termed the alleged non-cooperation of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government as an example “symptomatic of a systemic malaise” and sought a direction to the state authorities to extend full cooperation to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

While hearing the matter on August 22, the top court tore into the Kolkata Police over the delay in registering the unnatural death of the doctor.

Festive offer

Making an impassioned appeal to the protesting doctors across the country, the apex court had also asked them to get back to work, saying “justice and medicine” cannot be stopped. Moreover, it said it was issuing all necessary directions to ensure their safety.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the probe from Kolkata Police to the CBI, which started its investigation .the following day.

GST Council to meet

The GST Council on Monday is expected to deliberate on a host of issues, including taxation of insurance premium, GoM’s suggestions on rate rationalisation, and a status report on online gaming, sources said.

Sources said the fitment committee, comprising Centre and state tax officials, will present a report on GST levied on life, health and reinsurance premiums and the revenue implications.

The GST Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state ministers, will decide on whether to reduce the tax burden on health insurance from the current 18 per cent or exempt certain categories of individuals, like senior citizens.

The deliberations will also happen with regard to the goods and services tax (GST) cut on life insurance premium.

Sources said the Council would deliberate on the status of taxation on the sector and any change in tax rates is unlikely.

Besides, the Council is likely to be apprised about the ongoing drive against fake registration, the success of the drive and action taken against such entities. The total amount of suspected GST evasion would also be presented before the Council.

We will decide how many seats AIMIM will contest in the state. We are reviewing our position,” party leader and former MP Imtiaz Jaleel said on Saturday.
