Through a candid TikTok video, Bryce opened up about the true financial struggles her family faced during Chad’s career as a free agent, breaking down the misconception that all NFL WAGs live like millionaires.

Bryce Watts Hansen Opens Up About the Financial Realities of Life as an NFL Wife

Chad, drafted by the New York Jets in the 2017 NFL Draft after a standout college career at the University of California Berkeley, had a bumpy career in the league. His journey saw him sign with a total of eight teams, including the New York Jets, New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, and Atlanta Falcons. Despite being in the NFL for several years, Chad’s career was marred by frequent moves, unpredictable contract situations, and the lack of financial stability that many imagine comes with playing in the league.
As Bryce explains in the TikTok video, “He was on 8 different NFL teams. That means 8 different contracts are being signed and broken.” While she admits that the NFL’s pay is decent, she dives into the realities of being married to a free agent, where financial uncertainty is the norm. “NFL pay is ‘good money no matter what,'” she says, but the constant relocations and unpredictability were a huge part of their lives.

For Bryce, moving became a regular part of life. She jokingly calls herself “a professional mover,” having relocated to six different states in just a few years, as Chad switched teams. Bryce recounts the logistical challenges they faced: “I know how to get a flight… move all our stuff. It’s kind of just like a cost that you have to eat.” From last-minute hotel stays to the overwhelming task of organizing their lives in a new city, these costs were often an unavoidable burden.
Despite these challenges, Bryce stresses that they were always aware of how fortunate they were. “We’re in a great position,” she says. “The money is nothing to scoff at.” But she continues, “It’s interesting because it’s something that I didn’t know. I thought NFL players are millionaires.” While their financial struggles weren’t as severe as some may think, the reality of a transient, unpredictable lifestyle still took its toll.
During Chad’s time with the Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos, Bryce recalls the decision to opt for short-term leases or even day-to-day rentals, which ended up being more expensive than anticipated. “It’s nice to have the flexibility, but it ends up being more expensive than just signing like a month-to-month or yearly lease,” she shares.
Another unexpected financial burden came from health-related expenses. For NFL players, maintaining their health is essential, and Bryce points out, “A lot of money is going to doctor’s appointments… these things that are essential for players.” As Chad’s medical expenses piled up, the Hansens had to prioritize health costs over other financial desires.

With Chad’s retirement from the NFL, the couple faced a new reality. For over two years, the family lived without the stability of an NFL salary, and Bryce took on various odd jobs to contribute. “I was taking odd jobs here and there so that I could be very present in the situation,” she recalls. The financial struggles of being a free agent family were real, but they helped Bryce and Chad build resilience in the face of uncertainty.
