Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Government of India on October 25. The event with Minister Sitharaman will begin with remarks followed by a moderated session led by Dr John J. Hamre from 5-6 pm. The event will be followed by a private reception for participants from 6-7 pm.
Minister Sitharaman has held several of the Indian Cabinet’s most significant portfolios including Minister of Defence; Minister of State for Commerce and Industry; and Minister of State for Corporate Affairs. She has held the Ministry of Finance since May 2019. Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the spring 2024 election she outlined the government’s key development priorities in the July 23, 2024 Budget Speech delivered to Parliament. She is frequently listed as among the most powerful women in the world, and the most powerful woman in India.
About H.E. Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Government of India
H.E. Nirmala Sitharaman was appointed as India’s Minister of Finance in 2019. She was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in the Parliament of India in 2014, and subsequently reelected in 2016. She has also held several ministerial portfolios since 2014, including Minister of Defense, Minister of State of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. She has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2006 and previously served as a spokesperson for the party. Ms. Sitharaman obtained a Master of Arts degree in economics and M.Phil. from Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi and a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics at the Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in Tiruchirapalli.
