Financial Insights That Matter
Japan’s finance minister has told his Group of Seven counterparts that US tariffs on steel and aluminum products which took effect last week are “regrettable.”
Kato Katsunobu was attending an online meeting of G7 finance ministers on Monday. The meeting followed the inauguration last week of Mark Carney as the new prime minister of Canada, the current chair of the G7.
The ministers shared their opinions about the global economy and US levies. Kato told reporters after the meeting that he had stressed Japan’s stance that tariff policies should ensure predictability and be based on international rules.
Kato said he told other ministers that it is “regrettable” that the United States has gone ahead with imposing additional tariffs on steel and aluminum from Japan.
He added that he had expressed Japan’s intention to “hold thorough discussions with Washington over the US tariff measures.”
A 25-percent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports to the US came into force last Wednesday.
