On Thursday 14th November 2024, the team from Ministry of Finance, Japan, visited the Port Moresby Wastewater Treatment Plant that was built with the support of Japanese ODA Loan in January 2020.

The primary objective for this visit was to observe and understand the operation of the wastewater treatment plant in Joyce Bay. Upon arrival, we were engaged in an informative session, lectured by Mr Anzac Kaplimut, Supervisor in charge of Joyce Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant of Water PNG Limited, that positioned us to understand the facilities design, operation, and benefits.

Information session with the site supervisor.

After the informative session, the team took a tour to see the operation plant. The facility is creatively designed to transform the raw sewage into effluent that can be safely discharged into the ocean. This transformation is very crucial for the human’s health and the ecosystem.

As we tour the plant, we were able to understand each phase in the purification process. From treatment to sedimentation and disinfection. Each step plays a critical role in ensuring water quality meets the environmental standards set by the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA).

Observation of the Sedimentation Tank.

Observation of defoaming and effluent pump with the site supervisor.

After witnessing this plant, this taught us the importance of essential wastewater management for maintaining both public health and environmental sustainability.
